Dynamic CDC Joins the Puerto Rican Chamber of Comerce of South Florida in welcoming Miami-Dade County Manager Burgess

County Manager George M. Burgess was pleased to join the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce for lunch recently to discuss the County’s progress and challenges over the last few years. After closing more than $800 million in budget gaps over the last three years – while also lowering the ratio of employees to residents and the inflation-adjusted cost of government to the lowest levels in some 20 years – the County will have to close a budget gap of another $440 million for the upcoming fiscal year. The Manager stressed the importance of civic groups like the Chamber getting involved, working with elected officials and articulating their vision of Miami-Dade’s future.

Not long after his visit, the County Manager and Mayor Carlos Alvarez released their proposal for the 2010-11 fiscal year, which was a no-tax-increase budget that suggests deep administrative cuts while ensuring no layoffs for sworn police, firefighters and paramedics. Some other services, such as library hours, park maintenance and grants to community groups, would be reduced somewhat in order to allow the government to live within its means without a tax increase during is difficult economic time. The entire budget proposal is available online at www.miamidade.gov/budget.
